What Do Customers Want From Local Small Businesses After a Pandemic?

The study polled 2,000 adults in the United States about their shopping habits and what they would like to see from small local businesses in the aftermath of the pandemic.

The survey’s overall message is that customers appreciate how small local shops have evolved during the health crisis. 41 percent of those polled said they appreciated small businesses that provided curbside pickup. The same proportion said they appreciate the option of contactless payment, and 36% said they appreciate businesses having an online store.

The Eight Most Important Factors

According to the survey, the top eight items that shoppers want most after a pandemic are:

  • Options for contactless payments 37.7 percent
  • 37% of people prefer curbside pickup.
  • 37% of online stores
  • 34% of people use self-checkout.
  • 30 percent for virtual/digital loyalty cards
  • 30% of people use mobile apps.
  • Online pre-ordering is used by 26% of people.
  • QR code menus account for 23% of all menus.

The Importance of Online Selling

The survey confirmed the importance of offering goods and services online, with 68 percent of consumers saying they would shop from small businesses more if they could buy items online.

The study provides valuable insight into consumer demands, demonstrating that many of the trends that emerged during the pandemic, such as curbside pickup and contactless payment options, are here to stay.

To remain competitive, small, local businesses must meet such demands by continuing to provide the services they provided throughout the health crisis.
